《红楼梦》的作者为了便于发抒感慨，也为了引起读者的兴味，在全书开头就把读者引入一个迷离倘恍的神话世界，借人们都熟悉的女娲补天的神话，巧妙地虚构了一个顽石“幻形人世”的故事。石头的经历，便是贾宝玉的经历；石头，便是贾宝玉的象征，也含有作者曹雪芹的影子。

“无材可去补苍天”，是作者对自己处在封建社会末世不能有所作为的悲愤和感慨。他从自身的经历中看到他出身的贵族社会的腐败、堕落，他曾经心爱的美好的一切也都随着无可挽回地破败下去了。他从一种朴素的辩证法的观点，认识到这种结局的必然性，认识到贵族阶级不配有更好的命运，因而对他们进行了无情的暴露和鞭笞。然而作者对他已往的富贵荣华生活又不无留恋，特别是对他热烈赞美的诸多人物（多为纯洁善良的青年女性）随着封建家族的败亡而玉石俱焚，悲惋痛惜不已。他也曾想有一番作为，去补封建社会破了的“天”，但社会没有给他这样一个机会（有机会也未必有办法）去干一番事业。以至使他“半生潦倒，一事无成”，在贫穷寂寞中度过了自己的后半生。所以，“枉入红尘若许年”，说的是贾宝玉，也未尝不是作者自己的慨叹。

作者把那块石头称为“顽石”，也大有深意。顽石的特点是棱角分明，执拗死硬，毫不通融。人如果具备这种品格，就必然同那个庸俗卑劣的上层社会处处榫头对不上卯眼。他不适应这个社会的需要，这个社会就必然要排斥他，不容他。第三回书中的《西江月》词批宝玉是“潦倒不通事务，愚顽怕读文章”、“天下无能第一，古今不肖无双”，正是宝玉顽石性格的写照。这字面上的嘲骂，实际是用反语来赞美宝玉不同那个恶浊社会合作的叛逆性格。

这首五言绝句，也写在第一回里。书中说，空空道人访道求仙从青埂峰下经过，把那块顽石上的文字从头至尾抄录回来，以《石头记》的书名在世上流传。后来曹雪芹在悼红轩里把这部书“披阅十载，增删五次”，整理成长篇章回体小说，并把书名改为《金陵十二钗》，并题写了这首诗。当然这都是作者用的烟云模糊法，其实作者就是曹雪芹。这首小诗语言虽然通俗浅近，感慨却颇为深远。
